Jul 22 2024
Goose Creek Mayor Greg Habib has been elected President of the South Carolina Municipal Association.
Mayor Habib’s one-year term as President began on July 19, when his term officially began during the MASC’s annual meeting in Greenville.
The Municipal Association represents and serves the state’s 271 incorporated cities and towns. It offers programs and tools to help municipalities be efficient and effective.
In his address in Greenville, Mayor Habib challenged MASC members to reach for excellence.
“I challenge all of us to strive for more,” he said. “To reach beyond the norm, to reach beyond your borders. Strive to make a difference in people’s lives in the way that only municipal government can.”
The Mayor pointed to Goose Creek’s all-inclusive Central Creek Park, and the impact it has had in the Lowcountry. “If you can’t imagine greatness for your city, how can you expect your residents to?” he said. “If you can’t envision the seemingly impossible, how can a vision be shared?”
Mayor Habib praised recent MASC projects, including a Civility Initiative aimed at dialing down political bickering in South Carolina; and the Association’s “Building the Bench” initiative that helps college students serve as interns, gaining valuable experience and knowledge that increases the talent pool for municipalities across the state.
The Mayor praised the Municipal Association’s staff and its membership. “I picture municipal governments on the ground floor,” he said. “Where things get done, and people work together, and labels don’t matter but hard work does.”
Mayor Habib, who served as the MASC’s First Vice President over the past 12 months, takes over the Presidency from Mayor Barbara Jo Blain of Conway.
