Graduate student gains hands-on experience with City
Apr 10 2024
If you’ve been by City Hall lately, you’ve seen Joey Morris hard at work in the Planning Department where he is an intern. Joey is in the College of Charleston’s Public Administration Master’s program, which requires an internship. After applying and interviewing with the City, Joey wisely chose Goose Creek over Mt. Pleasant after Mayor Habib was a guest speaker in one of his classes.
His time with Goose Creek has seen him get valuable hands-on experience under the guidance of his supervisor Alexis Kiser. “Through her mentorship, I’ve had the opportunity to work on the walker/biker survey project, figuring out how the City can improve infrastructure,” he said. He’s also participated in a Zoning Code Open House with Creek Compass, and helped out at the Fire Department.
Joey calls the internship an incredible opportunity to learn. “It’s given me more competency in local government and helped me learn more about public administration, the area I’d like to transition to in the future,” he said. “I love the City’s organizational culture … I’m constantly learning things and that’s something I truly value.”
Joey has explored several future options within Public Administration, including working in a bigger/urban environment, or transitioning back to a smaller, rural area.
Thanks for the visit, Joey, and keep up the good work!
