Goose Creek salutes 'champions of justice'
Feb 16 2016
Goose Creek Mayor Michael Heitzler has officially proclaimed February 2016 as Black History Month in the City of Goose Creek. The proclamation signing ceremony took place Monday morning, Feb. 15, at City Hall.
The theme of this year’s month-long Black History celebration is “Hallowed Grounds: Sites of African American Memories.”
The proclamation recognizes the “champions of justice and the sacrifices they made to bring us to this point … we honor the contributions of African Americans since our country's beginning, and we recommit to reaching for a day when no person is judged by anything but the content of their character.
“As we rejoice in the victories won by men and women who believed in the idea of a just and fair America, we remember that, throughout history, our success has been driven by bold individuals who were willing to speak out and change the status quo …”
The Mayor encouraged “all citizens to recognize the contributions of African Americans in not only our City but in our Country’s history, and encourage local residents to strongly support and participate in events planned to commemorate Black History Month.”
