GCFD first in state to use life-saving medical device
Aug 1 2024
A new, cutting-edge medical device has arrived at the Goose Creek Fire Department.
Goose Creek is the first fire department in South Carolina – and only the third in the nation – to use the Lifepak 35 monitor/defibrillator. The new device, which will be part of all EMS apparatuses in Goose Creek, arrived on July 25.
Made by Stryker, the monitor/defibrillator is a lightweight, ergonomically designed device that includes a digital touchscreen and clinically advanced therapy tools to help save patients in cardiac distress.
“This is a gamechanger for us,” said GCFD Fire Chief Adrian Taylor, who described the device as "truly cutting-edge technology” that will allow first responders to deliver the best possible care in emergencies.
The new monitors have “plug and play” USB connections for upgradable accessories, upgradable software, and endurance ratings above industry standards. The monitors the new devices are replacing were used for 12 years.
An initiative to bring the device to Goose Creek was a multi-year effort between the GCFD and Stryker. Chief Taylor thanked Mayor Habib, City Council, and the City Administration for supporting and funding the effort.
“This is an historic day for the City of Goose Creek,” he said. "This will bring definitive diagnostic cardiac capabilities to your front door when you call 911."
