• GCFD Emphasizes Preparedness During Severe Weather and Flood Safety Week

Nothing is more important than staying safe during a bad storm or flood, and the Goose Creek Fire Department is helping spread crucial information for residents do just that. 

South Carolina’s Severe Weather and Flood Safety Week is March 2-8. It is joint initiative of the SC Emergency Management Division and the National Weather Service.

According to GCFD Chief Mike Nixon, the week is about preparing for the worst. 

“Our community’s safety is a top priority,” Chief Nixon said. “Severe weather can develop rapidly, and being prepared can make all the difference. We urge residents to review their emergency plans and ensure they are ready for any weather-related challenge.”

Watches and Warnings: Know the Difference 

Weather Alert Systems: Don't rely on just one source! The importance of having MULTIPLE ways to receive severe weather alerts. 

Tornado Awareness and Safety: Understand tornado warnings, identify safe shelter locations, and create a family tornado plan. 

Thunderstorm and Lightning Safety: Recognize the risks associated with lightning strikes. Seek safe shelter during thunderstorms, and avoid flooded roads. 

Flood Safety: Understand flood warnings. Never drive or walk through flood water, and prepare a flood emergency kit.

Turn Around, Don't Drown: Never attempt to drive or walk through flooded areas. 

After the Storm: Recovery & Safety: The storm has passed, but recovery begins.
