City mourns passing of former police chief

Former Goose Creek Chief of Police Richard “Rick” Ruonala has passed away. Chief Ruonala played a crucial role in the police department's history, serving from January 1980 to April 1989. Goose Creek Police Chief Harvey Becker offered the following: "Chief Richard Rounala had a vision for excellence. During his time as Goose Creek Police Chief, his unique leadership pointed our department in the right direction. We would not be where we are today if not for Chief Ruonala’s vision, hard work and determination. His professional policing philosophy planted the seeds for the GCPD’s current professional status, international accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). For that, the entire Goose Creek community is grateful. "On a personal note, it was Chief Richard Ruonala who hired me some 36 years ago. I was a young man from Michigan fresh out of college, and he gave me the opportunity to serve in this honorable profession. The Goose Creek Police Department has been my career and home base ever since, and I will be forever indebted to him for what he saw in me. My prayers are with his family and friends. May he rest in peace." Click below to view Chief Ruonala's obituary.
