Some of the best young golfers in the nation are coming to Goose Creek. The City of Goose Creek’s Crowfield Golf Club is hosting the fourth annual U.S. Kids Golf Carolinas State Invitational, to be held June 28-29. A practice round will take place on Monday, June 27. The event will feature players from across the Southeast and the nation – and several from outside of the U.S. PGA professional Greg Ray is the Charleston Tour Director for the U.S. Kids Golf Foundation. According to Ray, the invitation-only tournament will feature 157 players between the ages of 5 and 14. In addition to golfers from states such as Ohio, Texas, New Mexico and Kentucky, participants from the countries of Venezuela and Panama are on the tournament roster as well. Players qualified to play by earning different status levels through local U.S. Kids Golf events. Participants can qualify for other U.S. Kids Golf Major Championships including Regional, International and World, or Teen World Championships. Next week’s event was originally scheduled to be played at Patriots Point golf course in Mt. Pleasant. The condition of the putting greens on that course, however, forced tournament officials to look for another host site. “(Patriots Point) will be back in good shape soon, but the condition of the (greens) were a problem,” Ray said. According to Ray, the quality and condition of Crowfield Golf Club made it a natural choice when a new host was needed. “They have welcomed us with open arms,” he said. “We had a huge problem and they solved it. We are very grateful. “Crowfield will make our area very proud.” According to Ray, golfers will tee off beginning at 7:20 a.m. each morning, with the final tee time set for 3 p.m. Local fans are welcome to come watch the talented young golfers, though Ray said that spectators would be limited to walking.
