The department has two canines assigned to handlers within the traffic unit. The dogs and their handlers are referred to as K-9 teams. K-9 teams are assigned to the traffic unit to allow flexibility in scheduling so that their availability can be maximized across the various shifts.
K-9 teams are an invaluable resource to patrol work due to the dogs' ability to track and apprehend criminal offenders, search buildings, and detect illegal substances. K-9 teams train weekly, often with K-9 teams from surrounding agencies. K-9 teams are on-call when off duty.
